Save Springburn Post Office

Last updated: 30 May 2025
I welcome the momentum to save Springburn’s Post Office and I commend Spirit of Springburn for its efforts. I have raised the plight of Springburn’s Post Office twice in the Scottish Parliament
But, the reality is this is a UK decision. I have written to the UK Government (see below) and I urged them to halt the process underpinning the closure threat.
That process was signed off by the current UK Labour Government and only came to light when details were leaked to the media. A flawed process will lead to a flawed outcome and the UK Government must act now. I welcome cross party support efforts making the case to the Post Office.
However, the fight must be taken directly to the UK Government. They must not hide behind this flawed process; but rather think again. Closure will impact local residents and businesses; as well as hamper regeneration efforts that are ongoing.
Its time for the UK Government to do the right thing for once.

The Post Office are running a consultation about Springburn Post Office. They are seeking to turn it into a franchise - meaning it will stay open, but not run directly by the Post Office.
You can read more about this at https://www.postofficeviews.co.uk/national-consultation-team/springburn-way-g21-1bu-043832/supporting_documents/Springburn%20Way%20G21%201BU%20%20Information%20Letter%20%2028%20May%202025.pdf
I am disappointed that the Crown Post Office is not to be retained, however a franchise model at the same location offers opportunities. I know many local people had been concern the Post Office would leave shopping centre and town centre all together.
I will seek to meet with the franchisee in due course.
In the meantime, I would encourage you to take part in the consultation at:

The Post Office have announced they will move the Post Office network to a fully franchised model.
This is a deeply worrying time for the Springburn community. We know how pivotal the role of the Springburn Post Office is within the town centre. Moving to a franchising model could see the Post Office leave the town centre all together and will certainly see a diminution of service to the local community and businesses.
Springburn is a low income area with many small business and no bank. We are keen to drive regeneration. Unfortunately it increasingly looks as if the Post Office is implementing plans which flies in the face of regenerative efforts as well as undermining financial inclusion for many.
Whilst I will clearly work constructively with the Post Office as to what franchising will mean for Springburn, the UK Government should halt this process which they agreed should be undertaken by the Post Office.
